“Doug Jones, introduced our oldest son, Derek, to inline hockey when I was an assistant coach with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the mid-1990's.
It was Derek's first foray into organized team sports. He couldn't have had a better coach than Doug for that big step. Doug is very knowledgeable and also a very good teacher. Derek was only four years old at the time, but Doug was able to connect with Derek at such a young age on Derek's level. Most importantly, he was a passionate and compassionate coach. It was a wonderful experience. Derek improved both his skill set as well as his understanding of the game. But more importantly, Doug taught Derek about the competitive side of the game in an understated way as that competitiveness is so critical as young athletes climb the ladder in sports.
Derek went on to play Division 1 college ice hockey at Providence College and professional hockey in both the ECHL, AHL, as well as one NHL exhibition game with the Nashville Predators. Today Derek is the head coach of the Wheeling Nailers, the Pittsburgh Penguins affiliate in the ECHL.
As parents, we don't believe Derek would have accomplished all that he has without Doug's influence all those years ago in the Anaheim Bullfrogs youth inline program. We recommend Doug as a coach unequivocally. To this day, we are grateful for all that Doug did for Derek when he was just a little boy being introduced to organized sports for the very first time.

They arrive early, pulling up in their family SUV that transports them to Kapolei Inline Hockey arenas. Out they come in a bundle of commoOon with lots of giggles and excitement. The Dela Cruz quintuplets, are here for their weekly practice.
The family under the guidance of their mom, Marcie and father Ray run into the facility completely pumped up to get their gear on and hit the rink. Out of the SUV first, comes older brother Makaio, the natural athlete of the family who grasps everything easily. He also is a football player and at eleven years old, in a short time span he has shown a natural ability to play the game that would take quite a few years.
Then the “quints” join him (as they are called) first comes Kamalii the only young lady within the quintuplets, but don’t be fooled as she is a tireless worker who each week is the first one on the rink and last one to leave. She is passionate about what she does and how she plays.
Now the fun part begins as her four brothers, Kaolu, Kapena, Keahi and Kupono hit the rink. It’s like a reality show. The boys, fiercely compeOOve, show their ability to make the most of their rink time. Each one tries to outdo the other as they work through their drills. Kamalii always goes to the front of the line to do what’s asked, but her brothers stay towards the end of the line often engaging in shenanigans with each other. Bouts of “no, it's my turn” echo through the KIHA rink as they push and shove each other to be the next one to go. Coaches are holding back their laughter as the boys make it fun and it’s contagious,
In what can be described as it must be seen to be believed, Each Saturday, Makaio plays in the 11u division at KIHA. This is his first season by himself. Kamalii has made the Tier 1 group of the 8u division. Her brothers all four are in the 8u Tier 2 division. Each one has a different game time on Saturday, so mom and dad, literally endure a four hour tenure as spectators and provide the encouragement.
Makaio plays his first game and works his hardest. His team comes up short, Kamalii’s team in 8u wins their game as she scores the game winning goal in the second half of the game to cheers from her own ohana who are on the second floor.
But the true show is the four brothers. As their game starts they are so focused on getting a loose puck and a log jam occurs on the boards. All four brothers are trying to get to the puck and literally both team’s players are in the same spot. Kapena shouts, “its mine (puck)”, only to be thwarted by Kaolu who interjects, “no it’s mine”. Then like dominoes, Keahi tumbles and theboys go down in a heap.
Laughter is heard on the second floor observation area as the players are now trying to get back to their feet. In a true gesture of brotherly love, Kaolu helps Keahi to his feet (skates) so that they can continue the battle. Their game ends up 1 – 0, as Ripley Choate, part of the three girl Choate family who play here also, scores the game winner.
After their games, the boys exit the rink, tired, sweaty and find out that they have an after game snack. The smiles return to their faces and losing is almost instantly forgotten. Cupcakes, crackers and an orange washed down with Capri sun is enjoyed by all. Today, two of the quints have won their game while their siblings came up short. It doesn’t mafer they love it.
Mom packs up their gear, they all scramble out the front door and say goodbye until their next practice.
Four boys, one girl, one older brother and four hours later, the Dela Cruz ohana heads home.
Hockey’s new first family of the Hawaiian Islands has left their mark on KIHA.

Everyone Plays - Our goal is for Kids to play Inline hockey , so we mandate that every child on every team must play at least half of every game.
Balanced Teams - Each year we form teams as evenly as possible, because it is fair and more fun when teams of equal ability play.
Positive Coaching - All of our coaches are AAU background screened and encouragement of player effort provides for greater enjoyment by the players and ultimately leads to better skilled and better motivated players.
Good Sportsmanship - We strive to create a safe, fair, fun and positive environment based on mutual respect, rather than a win at all costs attitude, and our program is designed to instill good sportsmanship in every facet of KIHA.
Player Development - We believe that all players should be able to develop their inline hockey skills and knowledge to the best of their abilities, both individually and as members of a team, in order to maximize their enjoyment of the game.
